31 July 2004. Me and the rest of the #northlands crew show up infort of the Mercury Live in Cape Town. It's Whiplash tonight, where metal fans can come together and have a good time. We line up infront of the door, readt to see the show and meet the people. I'm the first one to step inside, when suddenly I am greeted by a big Nigerian guy. "ID, please?" he asks me. Seeing as I am only 16, I dont have my ID yet, but I didnt forsee this to be a problem, seeing as I had gotten into many gigs before this one. I try and explain to him that I wasn't there to booze it up, merely to support the SA metal scene, but the answer stays no. Me and another guy wait outside in the rain for abour 30 minutes before finally the other guys who had ID's managed to get in got the manager to come talk to us. Our worste fear was confirmed, we wouldn't be getting in tonight. We stand outside another hour while I frantically call friends trying to organize a place for me to crash for the night. Now, the question I have is, why does the SA metal scene not look out for such things happening when they always complain about how little support there is for metal in SA? They even had to turn the children of one of the bandmember's from Arcana XXII away since they weren't 18. I know it's hard for the club owners, seeing as they can get shut down if the police raid the place and there are minorities present, but please. Next time, try and organize something for the next generation of fans, you're going to need them later.
