I really should not be telling you this, This is Mayhem, This is blackmetal.Nevertheless, for those who have been lost over the last decade or so, I will do my utter fvcking best to produce and recall some information on the band anyway.
Here is some history I compiled with help from the official Mayhem Site, some old magazines, and my brain...
Its somewhere in 1983, deep winter most probably. Mayhem is formed. The Title 'Mayhem' being derived from 'Mayhem with mercy' (Venom Song).Two years later, 85, they performed their first
live gig in front of a very obscure crowd.
1986. 'Pure Fucking Armageddon” is released. Maniac also joins Mayhem as permanent vocalist, after Messiah was in and out as session vocalist during the year.
In the next two years, Deathcrush was released, Manheim and Maniac left.Torben and Kittil from Vomit joins, and leaves.Dead and Hellhammer joins, late 1988.
In '91 Dead kills himself, Necrobutcher left as a result.
In 1993, “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas“ is recorded, Csihar did vocals, and Bass was handled by Count Grishnackh, But shortly after, Oystein Aarseth (Euronymous) was murdered by Count Grishnackh. Mayhem Suffered, everything was on halt.It is not until 1994 that “De Mysteriis Dom Santhanas” is released. It was dedicated to Euronymous.
In 1995, Mayhem was given rebirth, by Hellhammer,Maniac, Necrobutcher, and a new member Blasphemer, from “Aura Noir”.
1997, Mayhem did 'Mayhem Invades England' Tour, and uses Nordgaren as their live rhythm guitarist for this tour.
From hereon, a number of excellent releases were made, refer to the discography for a complete list of this.
I think it is vital to mention Euronymous' underground blackmetal shop here too. It was called Helvete, which is Norse for Hell. The purpose of this was to bring “elite” blackmetal members together as “The Inner Circle”. Dead commited suicide in 1991, using bullets given to him by Grishnackh(Varg Vikerness). Euronymous took photos of the suicide scene, You could see some of them on the cover of bootleg 'Dawn of Black Hearts'.
As mentioned, In 1993, Varg murdered Euronymous(Oysten) in his apartment. This was a lengthy period of tense friendship.Oysten was found dead with a number of stabwounds. It is suspected that Varg attempted to outdo his rival, Faust (Emperor), where Faust led a homosexual to his house, and killed him. Varg was laughing during his trial. He was sentenced to 21 years in prison, which is the maximum for Norway. On his arrest, he was found with over 150 Kg of Dynamite which he was going to use to destroy Nidarosdomen.
It is a fact that Mayhem had a complex past, and a myriad of member changes, but this is nothing unexpected, and it has only contributed to their musical output even more. With blackmetal being a supreme and utter grim fucking art and existance, and blackmetal followers being selective on these principles, you will still find at least one Mayhem release in any collection. Mayhem have been sticking to the groundwork of blackmetal, and they still do immense things for the individualists, that is Blackmetal disciples.
The lyrical concepts, well, Black. Darkness, Occult, War, Obscurity and Anti Organized Religion. Mayhem writes from the soul, and what you hear, is what you get. Period.
Mayhem is currently being mastered by Maniac(Vocals), Necrobutcher(Bass), Hellhammer(Drums) and Blasphemer(Guitars). The ex members, is Euronymous, Dead, Grishnackh, Manheim, Messiah, Atilla, Blackthorn, Occultus, Nordgaren, Torben and Kittil.
With rumours overflowing our obscure south african continent, about Mayhem touring here, everyone was sceptical. This rumours have been confirmed by the PaleEnchantress (hail Quintessence), and Mayhem will indeed curse our shores. Of Dates, I am not sure, but keep your eye on the sources, and your ears among the supreme.
I hereby leave you, it is now time for me, to sit back, and confront the current hated daylight, with “De Mysteriis”.

Maniac no longer in band.Now Atilla vocals.
Wow never knew Mayhem was thinking on coming over to South Africa.Thats quite excellent.
Best Mayhem album I feel is DeathCrush.That album along with Burzum&Darkthrone and Bathory define what Blackmetal is.
