Well this album certainly took me by surprise, first of all because I do not like black metal (except for a few exceptions here and there) and secondly because this was made by Ihsahn, which I do have respect for, but in Emperor I could not stand his voice.

Now before we get back to the voice, this is obviously his solo album and to sum the album up in a nut shell, it is an impressive piece of music in the vein of: technical-jazz-classic-melodic-thrash-symphonic-power-(even almost) death (in places) - black-progressive metal.... quite a moutful in my opinion, ha ha ha! His voice is fucking good, to say the least, going from midrange almost Alice in Chains like vocals, to clean high, mid and low range power metal vocals, to raspy vocals as in thrash and your typical black metal type vocals, but the black style vocals are actually not as irritating to me as normally (no offence to our black fans on the forum, just a personal opinion!)

As far as my knowledge goes Ihsahn played all the instruments on the album, except for drums, which was done by the drummer of Borknagar, which impressed me even more, I always knew he was a good guitarist, but not this good, he does some impressive riffs, progressions and solos!

Favourite songs? Hmm.. I still really can't decide, even after repeated listens to the album, all are intensely good. I think this album was made to listen to as a whole, you can obviously enjoy the songs individually as well, but it feels almost like a journey listening to the album, without having read the lyrics, or any reviews on the net I get the idea that this is a concept album.

In any case, once again, listen to this, make up your own mind.
